Diabetes causes

Various potential diabetes causes exist. When considering that different types of diabetes can have different underlying medical reasons, then even more causes can be considered than if you were to look at only one form. Below are brief overviews of things that can lead to a few major kinds of this disease:

Type 1 diabetes (T1D)

It is thought that both environment and genetics can have an impact on causing T1D. As a polygenetic disease, multiple genes have contributions. The Coxsackie B4 virus is thought to be a trigger infection. Genetics may make some individuals more prone to such triggers than others are.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D)

For the most part, T2D is brought on by factors of genetics and the person's lifestyle. For example, NHANES has estimated that obesity contributes to roughly 55 percent of T2D cases. On the flip side of the coin, one study saw an 89 percent reduction in the rate of diabetes amongst persons with certain factors: having a healthy weight and high physical activity levels, along with eating a healthy diet, consuming alcohol in moderation, and not smoking.

Certain other medical conditions can also be causes of diabetes of this form, or worsen the condition in those who have it. Some possibilities are: high blood pressure, Cushing's syndrome, and thyrotoxicosis. Certain medications have the potential to interfere with the body's system of regulating insulin, which can lead to high blood sugar levels.

Gestational diabetes

There are no particular known gestational diabetes causes. Some think that hormones which are produced during pregnancy lead to an increased insulin resistance in the pregnant woman. This, it is thought, ends up at a worsened tolerance of glucose.
